From erosion control to landscaping at the Cobre Panama project

(Panama, February 15, 2012)
Re-vegetation through hydro-seeding, management of surface waters and sediments, and the use of biodegradable coconut fiber are some of the procedures that Minera Panama applies for erosion control at their projects in the districts of Donoso and La Pintada, with a vision towards landscape management.
The implementation of these actions produces multiple benefits for the environment and the communities, as well as controlling the loss of topsoil and stabilizing slopes to prevent landslides, which favors water filtration and the consequent growth of plant life, which in turn reduces soil compaction and regulating the physical and chemical properties of the soil, explained Carlos Sanchez, Environmental Director for Minera Panama.

“Hydro-seeding, for example, is a highly effective method by which seeds, water, fertilizer and other organic compounds are mixed together and placed directly on the ground.  It is a technique for easy application on a large scale because it’s done with specialized mechanical equipment (hydro-seeder) equipped with pumps.  This contributes to greater germination and better coverage, to the survival of plants and uniformed distribution of seeds”, added Sanchez.

The Minera Panama erosion control program takes place in areas which by their natural condition are vulnerable to the actions of wind and rain that often makes the soil easily eroded, as is common in areas where soil is moved during road and pathway refurbishments.  As a result of these labors a contribution is made to the protection of the soil and the formation of jobs, for their visual and functional integration into the landscape that surrounds them.

Antonio Salas, Biodiversity Manager for Minera Panama, noted that seeds from native species are used during this process, which are provided by the very inhabitants living in communities close to the project.  “Community support is very valuable not only for the raw materials they offer us, but especially because it integrates them in the task of environmental conservation, creating awareness and making them true partners for sustainable development,” he said.
